Marquicia Jones-Woods has been surrounded by trouble for more than half a century in her native West End community.
“I’ve been living in the neighborhood for 55 years,” she said. “I’m 55 years old.”
The woman known as Ms. Quicy smiles and laughs as she tells the gag with perfect timing. But she has always been serious about the streets where she lives. For 39 years, she has been the driving force of Q-Kidz, an award-winning dance team that has won competitions around the country, been featured in acclaimed videos and become ambassadors for the neighborhood throughout the Tristate.
“At 15, I decided I wanted to do something with kids,” Ms. Quicy said. “I would take them to church, where they could get a meal, get some studies in, just be kids. That led to beautifying the community, painting mailboxes, picking up trash, planting flowers.
